Chapter Five

Seth took a deep breath. Screaming inside of his helmet would only hurt his ears, and he wasn’t the one that needed to suffer. The communication link remained dead and his control panel was switched off. Marek had a lot of explaining to do. No. Seth planned on killing him. Talking was highly overrated.

The ship sank down and flew through the atmosphere. Seth gazed at the red, rust-colored sand that went on forever. The skies never turned blue on this part of Elvarian. The red continued upwards and the heavens burned with a large range of red and orange. Parts of the sky had light shades of pink and purple. On vidscreens, Elvarian looked too beautiful to be real, but staring at the planet showed that opinion had been wrong. The vidscreen images were dull and lifeless compared to the real thing.

The ship vibrated before pulling toward the left. Seth growled as he steadied his body. The harness hurt as it pressed into him without warning. A large, lush, green body of water passed underneath. Steam flowed from the lush, green water. Small houses lay in lines around the spring.

The communication link switched on. Seth growled.

“Now, now. You can’t be angry looking at something so beautiful. The red sand reminds me of your hair, but it lacks your vibrancy. For all of its appeal, the planet doesn’t compare to you.”

That touched him, but he refused to let it show. “Now you’re talking to me.” Seth tapped his knee. “After an hour of ignoring my presence, you want to talk about sand.” The anger was a little forced. Those sweet words took a little of Seth’s steam.

Marek laughed. “Actually, I was looking at the heated springs and imagined your naked body swimming through the water.”

Seth’s eyes widened. “That’s not something you need to share with me. We’re colleagues, nothing more.” The desire couldn’t be denied, but the more sexual imaginary Marek threw at him, the harder it became to keep the other man out. Even now, his belly fluttered with anticipation. The little hairs on his arms stood up. But Seth had decided long ago to never let anyone get too close. It was too late for him to open his heart and learn to trust.

Seth already knew Marek was a man used to getting his own way. “I can’t be what you need,” Seth said. The conversation needed to happen, and sitting behind Marek, he couldn’t look at his handsome face. It gave Seth the courage to be honest. “Look. Life’s not fair. You were given a mate that can’t be with you.”

“Won’t, not can’t,” Marek said, interrupting him.

“I’m sorry,” Seth finally said. “I never meant for this to happen.” After years of listening to all the crude comments and stories about his sex life, something inside of him had broken. He couldn’t be that person. His body belonged to him, and he was too scared to share it.

“I’m not letting you go.”

“That’s not up to you.” Seth let the conversation end.
